Tastings

If you’ve had a child go through 2nd grade in the last 6 years, then hopefully you’ve heard all about the tastings!  This year marks our 7th year leading healthy food tastings for the 2nd grade classes.  About once per month, each class is treated to a sampling of healthy food.

We always start with either a fruit or veggie tasting.  At this first tasting, which either features a rainbow of fruits or a collection of vegetables harvested from the 2nd graders’ school garden, the goals of the tastings are introduced, as well as the rules.

GOALS:

1.  Socialization–”No Yuck Zone;” Polite table conversation; nice ways to to say we don’t like certain foods; try, try again!

2.  Culture Lessons–travel the continents, D97 Multicultural Center artifacts, learn about geography and climate, culture and food

3.  Nutrition Lessons–Eat the rainbow; Nutrient content; Feeding the body in a healthy way; Hydration; Exercise

After learning some basics about nutrition and its connection to learning and feeling good in that first tasting, we begin showcasing foods from different continents throughout the rest of the year.

Here’s our tastings cookbook.  Check out our recipes!
