Our Beye School trekkers walk or run during lunch recess. They do at least 4 laps (1 mi.) or up to 8 laps (2 mi.) one day each week. The K-3rd graders, known as our Junior Trekkers, participate on Tuesdays during lunch recess. The 4th and 5th graders, known as the Senior Trekkers, participate on Wednesdays during lunch recess.
What is Beye Trekkers?
Beye Trekkers is a voluntary weekly lunch program designed to encourage students to build endurance and cardiovascular health by running and/or walking. This is not a track or racing program, but a commitment to stay fit. The emphasis is on distance over time, not speed. The program is open to K-3rd graders (Junior Trekkers) and 4-5th graders (Senior Trekkers)
When does it start?
The program began on Tuesday, September 7th. The K and 1st graders run/walk during their recess, from 11-11:25am, and 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th graders run/walk from 11:25-11:55am. The program will continue each Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the year, weather permitting. Participation is voluntary and students do not need to participate every week.
What should children wear?
Participants need to wear gym shoes, and in cold weather, they will be required to keep their jackets on. On winter days, hats, scarves and gloves are a good idea.
How Does it Work?
On Tuesdays, P.E. Teacher Tom Rocco and parent volunteers supervise and track the number of laps students complete around the sidewalks that border Beye School. Each lap around the school is roughly 1/4 mile long (4 laps=1 mile). Students will earn fun incentives as they log miles and stay fit (e.g. plastic shoe token for each 5 mils completed). As kids finish each mileage card and turn it in, we plan to mark their miles on a large map of Illinois. How far can Beye School “walk across Illinois?”
